Diabetes Tips

Get moving

My diabetes success tip is to exercise. Exercise burns sugar. It helps keep my blood sugar numbers in a good range, helps my weight, and helps me feel good!

Live for now

I was not always successful with my diabetes care. I had a scary incident that shook me up. I regret that I didn't do better, but after much counseling, I realize I can’t live in the past. And, by no means am I perfect, yet I am successful because I haven’t had any emergency room visits in two years. My success tip is to appreciate the present.

Checking brings success

My success with diabetes is because I check my blood sugar and use the results.

Camp success

What helped our whole family adjust to our son’s diabetes was a diabetes camp just for children with diabetes. My son came back from camp a new person.

Prevent costly healthcare

I switched health plans to one that covered diabetes care – meters, strips, diabetes education – how else can I stay out of the emergency room or hospital if I don’t take care of myself.

All you need is a friend ...

Email this tip to a friend
My diabetes SuccessTip for others is to find a friend who has diabetes. You need someone who really understands what it is like. I can call my friend anytime. Sometimes she just listens, other times she’ll tell me what she did in a similar situation. I know she understands. Guys – you need friends like this too. It’s not just a girl thing.

Save your feet

My diabetes educator made me aware of “saving my feet.” Everyday I look at them for red spots and sores, and feel for calluses. I have my podiatrist’s phone number right next to my doctor’s.

I don't want my foot amputated

See what Maggie has to say about this tip.   Email this tip to a friend
I feel like a successful person with diabetes because I have never had a foot problem. Everyday I check my feet and tell my doctor to look at them also. I do this because my father had a foot amputated.

Go shopping when you're NOT hungry

I used to do my grocery shopping after work. Of course I'd be starving. Yes, I bought lots of stuff that would tempt me until I ate it. Now I go when I'm not starving.

Candy or not for low blood sugar

See what Maggie has to say about this tip. See what Herbie has to say about this tip. Email this tip to a friend
I used to treat low blood sugars with candy. I would treat "feelings" that were low just because I wanted the candy. I feel more successful with my care now that I test my blood sugar if I feel that way, and will treat if below 70. If I am not sure and can’t test I will treat, but its more of a prevention/precaution rather than “I get a treat.”

Keep an eye on all your food

I used to just count carbohydrates but was gaining weight. I am more successful now that I ‘Keep an eye” on my protein and fat intake.

A week and another week of menus

Food was my problem. It overwhelmed me. So many decisions. My dietitian helped me work out 2 weeks of menus. Each day I follow one day’s worth of menus. I may change it a bit, but I don’t get uptight like I used to.

Start off on the right foot

I used to skip breakfast and start the day running. My SuccessTip is to make time for yourself in the morning; just to regroup by yourself and think about your day and diabetes. A little planning has made a big difference in my day and subsequent control. I believe I spend less time thinking and worrying about my diabetes during the day, because I did my morning review.

Just how big is one serving

My blood sugars were unexplainably high until I saw a dietitian weighing fruit at a diabetes workshop. I was getting double the carbohydrate on some days. While on other days still more carbohydrate – when I added on 8-ounce glass of juice (30 gm carb). Wake up!!

Call the restaurant before you go there

See what Maggie has to say about this tip. See what Herbie has to say about this tip. Email this tip to a friend
My SuccessTip is to call restaurants before I go. I don’t eat out at fancy restaurants that often so I don’t know what’s available. I’ve found that if I call before I go, the staff will usually answer my questions about what is on the menu and how it is prepared.

Begin anew

I think how you “begin” diabetes makes a difference as to how successful one is with diabetes care. Some people might want to restart their diabetes by switching doctors.

Yes, there are all kinds of success

I recently talked to my doctor about new diabetes medications. I feel successful that I was able to discuss something that I was hesitant to bring up.

Find time to be alone

See what Maggie has to say about this tip. See what Herbie has to say about this tip. Email this tip to a friend
My tip for being successful with diabetes is walking. I do it at a regular time each day and test my blood sugar before and after. I know it helps with my control and weight – but what I like the most is the alone time. Rarely do I let anyone else come with me.

Working together on diet

For me, my success happened when I got someone to "diet" with me. My neighbor and I worked together and kept each other up. It's nice to have someone who understands.
