Focus on eating 5 fruits and vegetables a day
I lost 15 pounds that haunted me for years. It may not seem like much to some, but it really was a lot to me. What I did was focus on eating 5-a-day. That's 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each and every day. Also, that is the only type of food I allowed myself to have as a snack. I think the fruits and vegetables filled me up more than junk food. And, I felt better about myself when I ate these foods.

8 Glasses a Day
The best thing that helps me lose weight is drinking a glass of water at each meal and at bedtime. Sometimes I'm annoyed when I have to get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, but then I tell myself I'm peeing out fat. (I know it's not true, but it helps.)

Slow and steady wins the race
I have lost over 100 pounds and gained it back and more. It just frustrated me. It affected my everyday outlook. I knew I wanted to be closer to my ideal weight and not say "It's OK to be big." That really is OK for some, or many, but I truly realized that I did care to weigh less. What helped me keep 20 pounds off this past year, was to not try to lose so much. Before it was all-or-nothing. My Success Tip is to be realistic. Some weight loss really is better than none. I am living proof!

My success tip is to keep eating! That means don't skip meals. If you do, you just get hungry and overeat later.

Keep a record for one whole week
A food record. That's what made me successful. I kept thinking I didn't eat much. I kept a record for one whole week (that's hard, but stay with it). I realized I ate so many calories after dinner! That was the only thing I changed - evening eating. I lost my weight in six months and I have kept it off for 10 years. Sometimes I go back to the record keeping just to check.

Why drink juice when there's soda and beer
I used to think fruit juice was good for me and thought the more the better. I didn't realize how many calories it had. It's the same as soda and beer. I also have diabetes so I had a double whammy - calories and sugar. Instead of 2-4 large glasses a day, I enjoy a half a cup with breakfast

If your body's not hungry, don't feed it
The way I say "no" has made me successful. I say "No thank you. I'm not hungry." It works because it reminds me that I am not hungry. When I am hungry I will eat.

Less work and more play makes those pounds just fl
This Success Tip worked for my wife; I am sending it in for her. What she did to lose weight was to play with our son more. She is quite busy with work and felt worn out trying to think about fat, calories, and exercising. She also wanted to spend more time with our 4-year-old. She chose our son, but focused on ways to encourage him to be actve. Each week they attend a mom and child swim class and an active playtime group that includes child and adult. Her goal is activity 3 days a week so for the third activity they choose a nonclass activity. She knows it will take time to lose all the weight she wants to, but for now feels good about the time with our son and losing slowly.

I subscribed to a magazine that has great looking recipes. They all look so wonderfully, sinfully delicious. It's helped me try new recipes.

Just Say NO
I've had to learn to say "no thank you" and really mean it. It was not easy, but I finally got mad when I wasn't listened to. Before, I would give in, then feel bad later.

What they don't know won't hurt them
I wanted no one to know I was trying to lose weight. Too often people try to be nice and say "Oh, you look fine." and other things just because they don't want to agree that you really do need to lose weight. So I just started quietly this time and soon I was getting comments like "You're looking good!" Boy, that's better.

Stop, in the name of weight loss
The only way to lose weight is to eat less. The way I do it is - eat one serving - no seconds.

Silence is Golden
When I want to lose weight, I don't tell anyone. I don't want the pressure. I just eat a little less (usually no seconds) and say no to desserts. This usually happens twice a year, after the holidays and one other time when I have been consumed (sorry) by too many other distractions.

Smaller Portions is Key
My success for reducing fat, cholesterol and losing weight is to reduce my portion size of meat. I limit my serving to 3 oz - the size of a deck of cards. Now it is hard to believe, but I used to eat 3 times that amount.

I get by with a little help from my friends
When I want to lose weight, I tell everyone. I need the checking. I have too many excuses to talk myself into stopping. I rely on others to help me. I will often say that I need help for the next month or two so the "help" doesn't turn into "nagging." I have been doing this twice a year for 3 years. Each time I lose 4-10 pounds. I keep most of it off. I weigh 26 pounds less now than when I started this routine.

Swimming with child
My success at losing weight is similar to another suggestion I read on this web site. I take my child to swim classes once a week and have a goal of 3 exercise/activity sessions each week. My other two times are - lap swim (my own activity). I look forward to each activity for the exercise I get and for the specialness of it for who I share, or don't share it with.

Visualize Weight Loss
I lost 55 pounds over 3 years. What helped me was making a five-year commitment. I had tried numerouse quick fixes that did not last any longer than it took to take the weight off. I have a chart on the back of my bedroom door where I plot my weight the first of each month. If I don't lose one or two months, I just look at where I came from.

Lend a helping hand and lose weight too
I have tried countless diets since I was a teenager. I tried to accept myself as I was but then I gained more. A dietitian friend suggested that I get involved with a food pantry since I loved to cook so much and did know a lot about healthy meals. It was an odd suggestion ... but it had a remarkable effect on me. At the food pantry I give clients their food and a handout about good nutrition. I usually highlight that the handout is in their box or review it with them. That usually leads to questions about cooking and how to get the best nutrition for the least money. I guess what happened was I started listening to myself. I have lost 35 pounds since I started volunteering.
